Vico Sotto: Man of the Hour

By Luanne Manlapaz

Pasig City’s beloved mayor Vico Sotto. From Wikipedia.

Truly, it is through times of strife when heroes shine. The current COVID-19 pandemic has separated the wheat from the chaff, politician-wise, and Victor María Regis Nubia Sotto, ‘Vico’, as his country now knows him, is living up to his name.

He is one of the very few who has indeed stood out as a victorious (victor) leader (regis). At 29, he is currently the youngest elected mayor in the metro. His success in the 2019 elections ended the powerful 27-year political dynasty of the Eusebios, in a David-versus-Goliath kind of showdown that was highly sensationalized by the local media.

With minimal political experience prior (he was a first-term city councilor), his contemporaries easily dismissed him as “out of his league.” As proven by recent events, his inexperience most definitely did not equate to incompetence.

One can say that his future in front of an audience is almost fated. Coming from a clan of famed showbiz personalities including both of his parents, Vico’s future seemed to be cut out for him. His father’s longevity in the industry allowed for a “cult-like” following, as many consider him a living legend in Philippine show business.

His mother, at the time of his birth, was a beloved television host/actress. With his uncle also a veteran Senator, there is no denying his proclivity towards leading a very public life. What kind of public life might this be? Let’s do a little investigating. Below is a basic delineation of his Astrological placements, sans birth time.

A curious mind

Born on June 17, 1989 with Mercury and a Sun-Jupiter conjunction in Gemini, Sotto's mind is sharp and alert. With a very strong Mercury in its home sign, the planet of communication, information and intellect, functions at maximum capacity.

When Mercury is in Gemini, there is natural ease in gathering and absorbing information. There is a child-like wonder towards everything it encounters. Also present is a strong compulsion to question everything it finds interesting, not out of malice, but out of sheer curiosity. The need to communicate is heightened as well, as this placement allows for someone who is very skilled in speaking, writing or both.

With the Sun, his main identity, also in Gemini, he is someone who constantly needs mental stimulation. This is a sign that marvels in learning and knowing, just for the sake of knowledge.  Joy is found in understanding details, solving puzzles, and finding solutions.

With Gemini being a mutable sign, this is someone highly adaptable too, being able to adjust well with life and all its changes in shape and form. It is important to note that these traits are doubly magnified due to the Sun’s proximity to Jupiter. Being the largest planet, Jupiter expands everything it touches. This is someone with great confidence in his rational thinking, and his ability to figure things out.

Balatik, Filipino hunting trap inspired by Orion: On reading about Philippine pre-colonial astronomy

By Col. Romeo Solina, PA, retired Col. Romy Solina and his BALATIK diorama A few weeks ago, “Resti” Santiago, an astrologer friend, sent me a book entitled “BALATIK.” It is a book written by a University of the Philippines professor Dante L. Ambrosio, and subtitled “Etnoastronomiya, Kalangitan sa Kabihasnang Pilipino” and obviously in the Tagalog (Filipino) language. Although I was born in Manila and an a Tagalog, I found it rather a problem reading the contents of the book. Still, I must go over it since I must be knowledgeable in my own native language. On the other hand, the author must have a doctorate, having gone through the baccalaureate and master degrees to be able to write this treatise in the university as I also have gone through. The Balatik book concerns the methods used by the natives of the Philippines using the signs in the skies in order to determine certain seasons for their activities, such as fishing, sailing, hunting, planting, harvesting, and so on. ...

100 Years: The Life and Work of Serafin Lanot (Part 2)

By Ime Morales Read Part 1 Overhauling the Zodiac As the best known astrologer in the country at the time, mainly because of his book Astrology Through Filipino Eyes, which was read not only in America but also across Europe, Serafin Lanot was the only Filipino who got invited to attend the international conference of the American Federation of Astrologers or the AFA. In fact, he was made a member of the AFA convention faculty. During the conference, he presented his paper titled, One World, One Astrology. He wrote in that paper: "Now is the time for astrologers to assume the leadership in this fight for change, no longer as mere consultants and counselors to money changers and reactionary leaders, but as leaders themselves during this Age of Aquarius, assuming the mantle of seer and sage that both history and legend have thrust upon us." He went on to propose a "one world, one astrology" based on "reason, intuition and inspiration, to harmoniz...

100 Years: The Life and Work of Serafin Lanot (Part 1)

By Ime Morales Photos by Kat Palasi ( wwwkatpalasi.tumblr.com ) Serafin Lanot Lanot's former office As part of our research work on the life of Filipino astrologer and writer Serafin Lanot I, together with my friends from my astrology group (Astro Friends), trooped to the home of the Lanot-Lacabas to dig through the family library and go through the old journals and books of Serafin Lanot. There we discovered old certificates, rare books on astrology and even antique astrological equipment. The facts we unearthed, together with information gathered from books, Internet sources and interviews, helped build the report that I wrote for AFP in 2012. One year later, these materials also served to form my presentation on Serafin Lanot on the occasion of his 100th birthday. Finally, I am using the wealth of information culled from our collective research effort to write this entry for the website of AFP. For serious students of astrology in the Philippines, it is imp...
